I'm very glad you enjoyed the story. The idea that there's always a cost when humans wield or deal with magical entities' is so common that it's probably just human nature rearing its head. "Ain't nothin' for free," and all that. :)
I agree that whatever happens next, Ben and Ellen's marriage is probably over. Ben's learned that when the going gets really tough that he can't rely on her as a partner, and I figure that'll always be in his mind, eating away at any forgiveness he can manage. Plus, she almost cost him Ellen again, though to be fair, it's not as though she could've known.
